Somebody say, “Cheese!!” Ever wondered where that phrase came from and why we say it? Well, let’s tell you.
Long before the phrase people never smiled in photographs. First noticed in photos in the 1940’s, “say cheese” has been a laughter and smiling recipe for taking pictures.

It is said to have been introduced by an American lawyer and diplomat, ambassador to Russia, Joseph E. Davies. He lived from November 29, 1876 to May 9, 1958. He was believed to be some worth mysterious and mischievous when he served as adviser to Franklin D. Roosevelt the 32nd president of the United State of America.

These days, the word “say” is no longer uttered “cheese” is the word which gives the grinny facial expression. The “ch” sound in cheese causes you to clench your teeth, and the long “ee” sound parts your lips, making a facial expression that resembles a laugh.

Today, one of the more well-known and inexplicably popular photographic “smiles” for teenagers and some young adults is the mocha, trash, mess or some other silly word that could make people laugh.
So, the next time, the photographer asks you to say “Cheese” say it as loud as you can.
