What beauty the world holds but better still is the beauty of this world in words, it enables the home sitter gain the experience of the traveler.
William H. Gass said “The true alchemists do not change lead into gold; they change the world into words.” Appreciation of this art in any form is in itself a furtherance to an art that teaches appreciation of life. The Etisalat Prize for Literature is an example of such appreciative acts.
As the monologues of each of the shortlisted books are performed on stage, it is hard not to envision all of the hard work, research and creativity engineered by each author into the writing of the books and as the winning announcement draws near… it is totally impossible to guess who’s taking home the prize; all authors stood on a pedestal of excellence.
And the winner is ‘Jowoh Ile’ (And After Many Days). A Nigerian telling the Nigerian Family tale. As he is greeted by the cheers of the audience and he climbs the stage; all in that moment those it finally register that words aren’t merely words… there are indeed life scripted on paper.
